Xayn receives first AI Innovation Award

German F.A.Z.-Institute and AI Association honor outstanding German AI innovations

  • Xayn honored for (energy-)efficient and privacy-protecting AI

  • Berlin-based AI startup makes AI for organizations secure, efficient and sustainable

  • Xayn pioneers its own AI systems for businesses and institutions

BERLIN/MAINZ (GERMANY), October 10, 2023 – Berlin-based AI startup Xayn is the winner of the first AI Innovations Award. The F.A.Z. Institute and the German AI Association awarded the prize together with the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy IMW. The "KI Innovation Award" recognizes companies that develop groundbreaking AI innovations and use them sustainably for their industry and society. The jury with renowned representatives from business, science, society, and journalism selected Xayn's AI system as the winner in the category Middleweight.

"We are very pleased to receive this award for our AI development. It encourages us in our work to make AI efficient, safe and sustainable," emphasizes Dr. Leif-Nissen Lundbæk (CEO & C-Founder). "As a European startup, we are committed to developing responsible powerful AI. We have more restrictions in Europe because of regulatory requirements and little data, but instead of complaining about it, we should see this as an opportunity to develop smart algorithms and thus use this as a long-term competitive advantage for us."

Xayn unlocks secure, sovereign, and sustainable AI for organizations to use at scale

Berlin-based AI startup Xayn is pioneering next genAI for enterprises and institutions. The European startup builds secure, sovereign, and sustainable AI systems that leverage the power of language models at scale so that organizations can use AI efficiently, safely, and sustainably. Xayn’s technology is based on the latest AI research and unlocks the best of both worlds of Tiny and Large Language Models with its Retrieval Augmented Generative system.

This allows organizations with highly sensitive data (e.g., government agencies, law firms, financial firms) to deploy (generative) AI on a large scale. Xayn develops its AI systems based on the European values of transparency, sustainability, and data protection as open-source technology. Originating from research at the University of Oxford and Imperial College London, the team consists to date of more than 35% PhD scientists from different disciplines.

The Berlin-based AI company also sees its own approach as part of a pan-European, future-oriented development towards more technological sovereignty. The development and use of its own energy-efficient and privacy-protecting AI, which meets European transparency and sustainability standards, not only stands for the future orientation of its own company but also for the future viability of Germany as a technology location.

Categories and other winners of the AI Innovation Awards

Other winners include: Oxolo GmbH (category: Lightweight), HAWK:AI (category: Heavyweight), DB Netz AG (category: Super Heavyweight), and Qdrant (category: Rising Star). Among the finalists were well-known companies such as E.ON, Deutsche Telekom, and ERGO Group. The following criteria were decisive for the jury: (1) Degree of innovation: How does the AI solution differ from existing approaches in the industry? (2) Application: How is the AI solution used and what efficiency/productivity gains does it achieve? (3) Responsibility: How does the AI solution meet ESG criteria and promote sustainability? (4) Perspective: how will the AI solution continue to evolve in the future?

The distinguished jury was composed of: Daniel Abbou (Managing Director KI Bundesverband), Prof. Dr. Dr. Mira Mezini (Director Hesse Research Center for Artifical Intelligence - hessian.AI), Patrick Bernau (Head of Department Economy at FAS), Eduard Singer (Founder neusinger.ai), Silke Hahn (Editor at Springer Nature / Spektrum der Wissenschaft), Dr. Naja von Schmude (Co-Founder & CTO Peregrine.ai), Nicole Büttner (Founder & CEO Merantix Momentum), Leon Rausch (Head of Insights Solution Strategy Cision), Prof. Dr. rer. pol.
